The Tower of Our Lady: Amersfoort’s Highest Tower

tower of our lady amersfoort

In the centre of Amersfoort, one building defines the skyline: the Tower of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren), or Lange Jan. At almost 100 metres high, it is the third tallest medieval tower in the Netherlands. More than just stone and height, it is the soul of the city: elegant, proud and brimming with history.

346 Steps to the top

Climbing 346 steps sounds daunting, but it is an adventure worth taking. A guide leads you through the tower, sharing stories and adding atmospheric visuals along the way. The reward is a sweeping view across the city and the Dutch countryside.

If you have ever climbed the Dom Tower in Utrecht, the Tower of Our Lady will feel similar. Though this tower is a little shorter, since the Dom rises higher. But that is exactly the charm here: fewer steps, fewer crowds, and just as much character.

The Climb

The climb uses narrow spiral staircases all the way to the top. The guide stops at different levels to share stories about the tower’s history, sometimes with light projections on the walls. The steps are stone and can be cool and creaky. Small arched windows offer glimpses of the city as you go up. At the top, the 346 steps are worth it for the wide view over Amersfoort.

Enjoy a drink on the Square

Once back on solid ground, do not rush away. The Lieve Vrouwekerkhof, the square at the foot of the tower, is one of Amersfoort’s most inviting spots. Terraces line the cobbles, markets bring colour, and the tower looms above it all. Grab a seat at Café Marktzicht, order a drink, and enjoy the view of the tower.

Worth the visit

One of my first outings in Amersfoort was a visit to the Tower of Our Lady. I climbed on a rainy day, so the view was mostly hidden by clouds and mist. Even so, I loved every step of the climb and the stories the guide shared. I cannot wait to return on a clear day, when I hope to enjoy the full panorama and see the city spread out below in all its glory. It was a great experience, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Amersfoort.
