There are two ways to travel by train in the Netherlands:
Traveling with OVpay (recommended)
With OVpay, you don’t need a separate ticket or OV-chipkaart. Simply use your debit card, credit card, or mobile phone (if it supports contactless payments) to check in and out at the gates or card readers.
How it works:
- At Schiphol Airport station, tap your contactless card or device at the check-in pole to check in.
- Upon arrival in Amersfoort, tap the same card or device again to check out.
- The correct fare is calculated automatically and charged to your bank account.
It’s just like using a public transport card, but much easier since you don’t need to top up or buy tickets.
Traveling with a ticket

- Boarding: Follow the signs to the train platforms directly beneath the airport and look for trains heading toward Amersfoort Schothorst. Direct trains run every 30 minutes. You can also travel via Utrecht or Amsterdam, but the direct connection is the fastest.

Pro Tip: Walk from Schiphol Plaza towards the exit in the direction of the official taxi rank. Do not engage with taxi services that are offered to you unrequested. They claim to be cheaper, but often they are not.
3. By Rental Car
Driving offers flexibility, especially if you plan to explore other areas around Amersfoort.

- Airport Car Rental: There are three car rental companies at the airport: Hertz, Europcar, and Sixt. Their desks are situated at Plaza.
- Route: Take the A9 and then follow the A1 towards Amersfoort. The drive is well-signposted and easy to navigate. Outside of peak hours, there is usually no traffic jam.
- Duration: Approximately 40–50 minutes, depending on traffic.
